"What" refers to an event or interaction that forms the basic plot of an improv scene. It is a core component of a scene's Base Reality, which also includes the "who" (the characters in the scene) and "where" (the scene's setting). It is taught as one of the most basic tenets of improv theory: something should be happening in your scenes.
