Theatrical Improv, pioneered by Defiant Monkey Improv in 2009 is a an improv form focused primarily on the central concept of storytelling. Employing tactics of both longform and shortform, theatrical improv's main goal is to create a central storyline roughly following the structure of Campbell's Hero's Journey and Dan Harmon's stylized version of it, The Story Circle.

Inspired by the works of Keith Johnstone, Viola Spolin, and Del Close, theatrical improv provides a comprehensive and flexible structure well suited to the demands of an improv performance.
