A swinging door is a form of edit in which a player from the backline will momentarily interrupt the scene by running up to a player in a scene, grabbing him or her and spinning him around, and revealing some additional piece of information, before swinging the player back into the scene. The scene is put on pause as the swinging door is performed and returns in the same place when the swinging door player leaves the stage.

The player performing a swinging door should be playing some character, usually a conscience or a character from the past who has one or two quick pieces of advice or information for the character in the scene, such as the devil on the shoulder in old cartoons.
