In improv, a relationship is the behavioral dynamic between characters.

The relationship is not the back story behind the two characters knowing each other nor a label like "son" and "dad".

For example, the details of a romantic relationship including whether they're dating, engaged or married are not what the scene is about. What matters is how they treat each other and how they make each other feel and react.
