Conflict is an element of scenework. It is a core component of the story structure String of Pearls, used more frequently in shortform improv than in longform improv. In shortform, the conflict is established and then solved by the scene's characters. In longform, "conflict" can broadly refer to the much-debated concepts of arguing and disagreement. The game of an improv scene often hinges upon some form of conflict, usually between the irrational behavior of the game-driven character and the reasonable responses of a Straight Man.
